When marketers first step into any type of social media environment, whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare … they tend to fall into the trap of just counting the number of followers, fans, members, or friends that they have. Using this measurement alone can be a very misleading metric to base an integrated marketing strategy on.

We’re always aware that many of the followers of our own social media accounts are often not actually real people, or just other people following you in the hope you’ll follow them. It’s easy to be blinded by high follower numbers when measuring the effectiveness of your social media activities – beware!
