I'm glad I read on though. This well-reasoned article explains how thinking in terms of 'social media vs SEO' is counter-productive. Both approaches have their place, and in fact, both feed off each other. Having both strategies as elements of your general online marketing strategy is a good thing.
In our recent testing at Woof, we're finding that Google particularly is putting more and more store in how active a business is within social media (how many mentions, how many 'likes', etc) as a positive factor in SEO and search engine rankings in general.
